Expensive Taste, Inexpensive Cigars

Highly rated, inexpensive robusto

Cigars are a favorite pastime, literally. One can't rush through a cigar and, quite frankly, we're not sure why one would. The entire point about smoking a cigar is to slow down and savor the experience, whether it's in the company of good friends or alone on your deck on a warm summer night.

For those in the know, you don't have to pay outrageous prices to find an amazing cigar. Yes, there are those who think an expensive price tag is a guarantee of quality. Go for it. It's the same thing with wine: you can buy a $100+ bottle of cabernet (and many are worth it), but you can also find a $20 bottle from a small producer in an up-and-coming region that will make you reconsider everything you thought about wine.

We're highlighting four amazing robustos that we've enjoyed and think you will, too ("robusto" refers to the length of this type of cigar, which is somewhere between 4 1/2" - 5/12" long). We had two criteria: a high probability that a decent cigar shop would have the brand in stock and a single stick is priced around $10 a cigar (taxes and certain locales may push that a bit north, but not egregiously so). Although these are shorter cigars, they're long on taste and overdeliver on quality when compared to the relatively inexpensive price.

Right now through October 17, 2018, Famous Smoke Shop is running a special for $10 off orders of +$89 or $15 off orders of +$129, which is a pretty sweet deal for the cigars below and many other premium cigars. Note that there are some restrictions; check out their site for more details.

Padron 1964 Anniversary Principe

Gorgeous box-pressed, medium-bodied cigar from Nicaragua that shows off coffee, cocoa powder and some cedar on the finish. Rated 93 points by Cigar Aficionado and about $10.

Casa Magna-Colorado-Cigar.jpg

Casa Magna Colorado Robusto

Another stunner from Nicaragua, this was rated 93 points by Cigar Aficionado and was named its #1 cigar in 2008. Available for around $8, this cigar gets its Colorado name from the reddish hue of the wrapper. We've enjoyed many of these full-flavored cigars that turn slightly sweet on the finish. Delicious.

Rocky Patel-Sun Grown-Maduro-Cigar.jpg

Rocky Patel Sun Grown Special Reserve Maduro

Few people carry the kind of infectious enthusiasm that Rocky Patel has for cigars, whether they're his or someone else's. Available for around $9, this trunk-pressed cigar offers notes of bittersweet chocolate and nuts, and was rated 95 by Cigar Aficionado.

My Father-Number One-Cigar.jpg

My Father No. 1

If you're sensing a Nicaraguan theme, you're correct. Excellent cigars are being made there, including Jamie Garcia's My Father No. 1, which is a tribute to his father, cigar master Jose "Pepin" Garcia. Oily, rich and meaty, this cigar was rated 95 by Cigar Aficionado and is around $10.
